Through these organisations Murray often faced questions from industry with regard to the integrity of fluid power safety control systems and the challenge of designing systems to meet safety standards requirements. Murray found that there were some good products on the market to assist with fluid power safety, but there was still many applications they did not suit. Most offered limited safety integrity for complete interlocking with electrical safety systems. Also a number of manufacturers of products sold in Europe & Australia for safety applications could not demonstrate compliance with the key standards that outline the requirements for the safety related parts of control systems, such as AS4024.1 or EN954-1, leading to frustration for many designers.
